This paper presents a new approach for formulating the Unit Commitment Problem (UCP) with the utilization of renewable energy sources like Wind power, Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) power and the coordination of conventional thermal unit generation system. The significant task while operating the power system is to meet up the demand at a least amount of operating cost and at the same time fulfilling the equality and inequality constraints. In this operation planning process, after forecasting the load is the commitment of generating units. It comprises of two sub-problems. The first one is the unit scheduling problem and the second one is the economic dispatch problem (EDP). Recently evolutionary based search techniques are popularly applied to Unit Commitment Problem which may handle complex non-linear constraints and provide high quality solution. This paper proposes a new parameter free Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique for a unit commitment problem. The proposed technique is tested on IEEE standard 118 bus system comprising of 54 thermal generating units with 24-hour scheduling horizon. There are totally five wind power plants and five PHS power units are considered in optimization problem. Wind power is predicted from the forecasted wind data and PSH power output is calculated from the real time data of the PSH power plant. The proposed method performance has been verified through the comparison analysis with the existing techniques. The comparison results prove that superiority of the proposed method.
