Design and Analysis of a Linear Disc-Type Electromagnetic Actuator

Owing to the force limitation of solenoid actuator and non-linearity of traditional disc-type actuator, there is a growing demand for actuators with high thrust force and high level of linearity over the working stroke. Therefore, by merging the merits of both the solenoid and disc actuator, this paper presents a new linear disc-type electromagnetic actuator employing an armature with special "V" slots. Actuator modeling considering the magnetic, electric and kinematics field was built, and analysis especially on the slot angle and height was given in detail, which indicated that small cone angel and low height is optimal. Furthermore, experiments were carried out, and the simulation and experimental results agree well. Both results show that the new actuator has achieved a linear working range of 4 mm, driving force of 176 N, hysteresis of less than 3.5%, non-linearity of less than 7%, and step force rising time of 181 ms. Therefore, it is suitable for applications requiring compact volume and linear actuation like fluid valve and micro pump.
