Stress Concentration Factor Estimation for Composite Plates with Cuts Using Guided Waves

This study presents stress concentration factor estimation for a composite plates using finite element and inverse analysis. For the finite element analysis, so-called implicit-explicit sequential solution is modified to static-explicit sequential solution for applying static compressive surface forces and dynamic ton-burst Gaussian pulses to an aluminum-epoxy-aluminum plate with a centrally located square cutout. For the inverse analysis, displacement wave responses are obtained, utilized to estimate the stress concentrations and eventually their factors at the edges of the cutout. From the inverse analysis, it is shown that the wave responses can give proportional results with respect to the applied surface forces and the newly-proposed term, response parameters, can give a consistent association with stress concentration factors. Although it seems difficult to exactly estimate a static stress at the cutout and the corresponding stress concentration factor by only using displacement wave responses at this stage, the response parameters remain the same regardless of the applied forces. This property is potential to estimate stress concentration since stress concentration factor has the same property.
