A NEW EFFICIENT ESTIMATOR FOR THE POPULATION MEAN

In this paper, we propose a new efficient estimator for the finite population mean of the study variable using information on the auxiliary variable. The expressions for bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are obtained up to thefirst order of approximation. An optimum estimator for the proposed estimator is also obtained and its optimum properties are studied. It is shown that the proposed estimator is more efficient than sample mean, traditional ratio and product, Bahl and Tuteja (1991), Kadilar and Cingi (2003) and Solanki et al. (2012) estimators under optimum conditions. For illustration, an empirical study is also carried out.
