Preparation and Characterization of Surfactant Modified Bentonite for Adsorption of Cr(VI) from Aqueous Solution

Bentonite-based functional materials have been successfully prepared by modifying bentonite using cationic surfactants through ion exchange reactions. The material obtained was characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and TGA . methods. The results showed that the type and concentration of surfactant affected the characteristics of the material produced. The increase in basal spacing corresponds to the increasing carbon chain number of modifier. The modified bentonite has a rougher and porous surface compare to un-modified. The IR spectrum shows a new vibration absorption band of C-H that was not found in pure bentonite. The results of TGA showed additional decomposition stage, which indicate the presence of a modifier in the modified bentonite material. Type and concentration of surfactant affect the retention characteristics of Cr(VI). The modified surfactant bentonite material can increase the adsorption capacity of bentonite toward Cr(VI) ions.
