World trade outlook dims further in new WTO assessment

World goods trade is likely to weaken further in the third quarter of 2019, according to a new World Trade Organization projection that comes amid indications the U.S. could be headed for a recession. The WTO Goods Trade Barometer, formerly the World Trade Outlook Indicator, showed a reading of "below trend" at 95.7, under the baseline of 100. This quarter's reading is even lower than the previous two at 96.3, which the WTO, in its first quarter projection, said was the lowest in nearly a decade.
