U.S., Brazilian business groups push for phase-one trade package this year

The U.S. and Brazil should "seize the momentum" generated earlier this year and strike a partial trade deal in 2020, major U.S. and Brazilian business groups said last week. The countries should forge a "multi chapter trade modernization agreement" that addresses trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, digital trade, anti-corruption, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary standards and intellectual property, the groups said in an April 22 letter to top U.S. and Brazilian officials. Signatories include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's U.S.-Brazil Business Council, Amcham Brasil, the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, and others.
