Major U.S. companies attack Trump's basis for tariffs, urge their removal

Hundreds of U.S. companies and industry groups, including some of the largest, on Thursday attacked President Trump's central argument for tariffs in a letter contending that "both sides will lose" a protracted trade war. "Tariffs are taxes paid directly by U.S. companies, including those listed below - not China," states the letter, signed by more than 600 companies including Walmart, Target and Costco. President Trump has repeatedly claimed that U.S. consumers do not pay for the tariffs he has imposed on China.
