Analysts, former officials eye CPTPP accession talks, U.S. involvement

Members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership last week agreed to accession guidelines for new members, prompting renewed calls for the U.S. to rejoin the deal. The 11 CPTPP member countries met on Jan. 19 in Tokyo to discuss the accession requirements and other issues. President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal in January 2017, shortly after his inauguration. The deal has been ratified by Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico and Singapore. The remaining four - Brunei, Chile, Peru and Malaysia - are expected to finalize their participation this year.
