New-onset psychosis following initiation of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a commonly used treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is no indication in the literature that EMDR might trigger psychotic symptoms in patients with no previous psychotic disorder, and several studies have concluded that EMDR is likely a safe and effective treatment for patients with PTSD who have comorbid psychotic illnesses. However, the following case report details a patient with no previous psychotic symptoms who rapidly developed these symptoms after starting EMDR.
