It is important that quality system standards should be treated as a management issue to stay in this competitive market which needs a total cultural change towards Quality. Quality professionals cannot change organisation's cultural attitudes. It requires total commitment of the chief executive and the senior management team, and the same under the purview of the quality umbrella. This is how TQM comes into picture as a solid management tool which improves the quality of work of all the people in the organisation through group activity, participation of everyone, application of modern techniques through activation of the Total Quality Wheel of continuous improvement, self-development, mutual trust, creativity and quality consciousness. This paper explains - What is TQM? Why it is required? How to take action? What is meant by Quality?In fact, total quality means - quality of product - quality of price and quality of delivery. The entire organisation shall be able to adjust itself and control itself to the rapid response of customer's needs i.e. market environment. This eventually leads to the concept defined as process capability of the manufacturer. The objective of controlling the process is to hold each of the variables in the process within such a narrow range that, the effects of each are minimised to such an extent so as to give a consistent quality of production with lowest cost and timely delivery. This has been explained with reference to process steps in production of castings. This paper also explains the evolution of quality process, cost of quality, Management Commitment, Training and Development, Quality Audit, Case Study and steps for implementation of TQM.
