FEW PEOPLE are as committed as the Gemmells when it comes to encouraging frogs into backyards. Stewart and Susie turned their ordinary 9 x 4 m backyard pool into a thriving wetland, complete with rotting logs, plants and algal communities. They rippedup the pavers then landscaped most of the yard to blend in. Frogs came and bred by the thousand, and the noise they created — in this well-heeled Sydney North Shore suburb — became, frankly, embarrassing. Social gatherings became difficult as people had to shout in order to be heard over the frogs.
