Attracting new people and investment

THE second commitment in the Australian Dairy Plan is about creating an industry that is attractive to people to work and invest in, according to Australian Dairy Farmers president Terry Richardson."Ideally we'd have people lined up saying to us the dairy industry is a great place to invest and it's profitable and it's got some long-term opportunities," said Mr Richardson, who was one of the farmers involved in helping develop the plan."And ideally (investors) would have access to people who meet their operating needs and have the skills. And there would be clear pathways to farm ownership."Mr Richardson is a great believer in the potential of the dairy industry - particularly in being able to generate wealth for new entrants. "I've seen it many times," he said. "Somebody in their mid-20s and they own a herd of 500 cows and a contracting business."
