The cold snap in December and January had the makings of a good, old-fashion winter but it would appear that Mother Nature had otherideas. The wild temperature swings that followed seemed extreme but reminiscent of last year when there were three thaw-freeze cycles in January alone. Such extremes are not only hard on cattle, but forages in the field tend to suffer greatly, especially in low lying areas, resulting in extensive winterkill of legumes. If the extreme cycle continues, especially in March and early April, consider legume re-seeding options such as frost seeding or no-till.
