Japan scraps another nuclear reactor

High safety costs and an uncertain outlook for power demand have prompted Japanese utility Shikoku Electric Power to decommission another nuclear reactor, the 15th to be scrapped in the country since the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Shikoku voted at an emergency board meeting on 27 March to decommission the 566MW No 2 reactor at its sole nuclear power plant, Ikata in Ehime prefecture. The company informed the governor of Ehime and mayor of Ikata about its decision, and promised to ensure the decommissioning work is carried out safely.
