Seoul to cut LNG import tax, raise coal tax

South Korea's finance ministry plans to lower taxes on LNG imports while raising them on thermal coal imports, as part of a wider government drive to encourage the use of cleaner fuels for power generation. The new tax rate will apply to cargoes that are shipped from their supply source from 1 April 2019, reflecting the environmental cost for power plants in using thermal coal and LNG if the plan is approved by parliament.
