Steel tariffs may raise Driftwood LNG's output costs

The White House's imposition of tariffs on steel imports into the US could increase construction costs for the planned 27.6mn t/yr Driftwood LNG project, as well as the LNG price for consumers. "We will try to buy US steel wherever possible but may have to import certain specialty steels," said Martin Houston, vice-chairman of Driftwood developer Tellurian, on the sidelines of the Gas Asia Summit in Singapore in late October. "We estimate that in the worst-case scenario for an LNG plant, the steel tariffs could add about 25￠/mn Btu to our output costs."
