Thermal capacity to rise by 6pc within 10 years

Japan’s power industry needs more thermal power generation to ensure stable supplies amid the rising use of intermittent renewables, such as solar and wind, and an uncertain future for the country’s nuclear sector. Thermal power capacity is forecast at around 168GW in the April 2028-March 2029 fscal year, up by 6pc from an estimated 159GW in 2019-20, Japanese power co-ordination agency OCCTO says in its latest annual survey.
