Gas burn by Europe’s power sector is likely to fall more sharply than demand from other consumers this year, as a result of Covid-19 measures and the resulting drop in economic activity, the IEA says. Gas use in power generation is likely to drop by around 7pc globally, ac- counting for almost 60pc of the overall decline in gas demand, but is likely to fall “especially sharply” in Europe, the IEA says in its Global Energy Review 2020 report. The organisation expects lower electricity use from the industrial and commercial sectors to “squeeze” overall thermal output, while non-fossil fuel-fred power generation remains more resilient and output from renewable sources increases. Coal-fred generation could fall even more sharply than gas- fred output, the agency says.
