IT'S NOT EXACTLY NEWS that in a bad economy, companies are always looking for ways to cut costs. It is with that in mind that OEMs might gain advantages from using adhesives in electronics. In the electrical and electronic equipment market, adhesives compete with other bonding methods such as mechanical fasteners, brazing, welding, soldering and thermocompression bonding. Major bonding uses in the electrical and electronic equipment market include audio speakers (for radios, televisions, cassette players, CD and DVD players), battery covers (bonding covers to lead terminals), assembly, motors and printed circuit boards. According to industry studies, adhesives in the electronics market will increase 5.7 percent per year to 116 million pounds in 2004, which is slightly above the industry average but significantly less than the 2000 growth rate.
