Tariffs in Russia for carrying dirty products - mainly bitumen - by road tanker rose by an average of 4pc at the start this year against rates set in July. The increase was a result of higher operating costs, according to the national association of product shipping companies (NAPNP). Rates for journeys of up to 1,000km rose by about 5.7pc, while tariffs for longer journeys increased by 2.4pc compared with July. But these rates are up by 8pc and 6pc, respectively, against with the start of 2017. Journeys shorter than 1,000km account for about 95pc of the total - longer distances are rare because bitumen cools in transit, leading to handling complications.
