US railroads collected $1.4bn in fees in 2018

Major US railroads said they collected revenue of $1.4bn in demurrage and other fees from shippers last year. The US Surface Transportation Board (STB) has been taking a deeper look at railroad demurrage and accessorial charges in tariffs to better understand how those fees drive revenue. “It is not surprising that as railroads make an operational shift to a different model and when the new model focuses on precision in scheduling, that the railroads are going to pay closer attention to how their assets are being utilized,” Association of American Railroads’ general counsel Kathryn Kirmayer said on 8 February.
