NSW coal railway washed away by flood

The rail line connecting coal mines in the western coal fields to the New South Wales (NSW) capital of Sydney and on to the port of Newcastle and Port Kembla has been further damaged by flooding that has caused a landslide under the track. The track had not reopened properly following damage caused by bushfires at the end of December, limiting the abil- ity of coal mines in the western coal fields to freight coal to NSW ports. It has now been further damaged by flooding over the weekend that washed away substrate, leaving part of the track suspended in the air and unpassable. The track operator, Sydney Trains, is unsure how long it will take to repair the line.
