[Addition to 10,062/07.] Filter - presses.- Apparatus for straining wet coal &c. of the k i n d described in t h e p a r e n t Specification, and comprising a piston e delivering the coal, which is supplied to the cylinder by means of a hopper, into a drainage - chamber e1 having a hinged and weighted lid e2, is modified by the provision of a chamber with perforated walls to connect the cylinder and the drainage - chamber. The connecting-chamber tapers in width and increases in depth towards the drainage-chamber, so that the whole of the mass passing through is brought into close proximity to the apertures. A second modification consists in the provision of a second piston and drainage-chamber g1 to which the coal treated in the first chamber is passed. The pistons may be driven by cranks from the same shaft. A modification is also described in which the pistons of three cylinders working in parallel are connected to cranks set at regular intervals on the driving- shaft so as to balance one another and distribute the load. Nozzles or tapered outlets may be provided instead of the weighted lid.
