Crude-by-rail traffic grows at BNSF

A sharp rise in demand to ship petroleum products and industrial materials helped raise western railroad BNSF's third quarter revenue. BNSF shipments of petroleum products jumped by 45pc in the quarter to 104,370 carloads compared with 72,149 cars handled a year earlier. The Berkshire Hathaway-owned railroad said last week that revenue from its industrial products segment, which includes petroleum shipments, rose by 24pc in the quarter to $1.6bn compared with $1.3bn in the prior-year period. BNSF said that the business segment has benefited all year from higher demand for petroleum products, sand, rocks, taconite, steel and plastics.
