摘要

Titanium nitride (TiN) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coatings are widely used for cutting tools. These tin-based coatings - TiN as well as TiCxNy coatings - oxidize in dry oxygen or air at temperatures as low as 500 degrees C. So when used in cutting applications, such as high speed milling, the operating temperature of the cutting application ranges between 800 and 1200 degrees C, which is very high, and causes the TiN (titanium nitride) and TiCxNy (titanium carbo-nitride) coatings to oxidize rapidly. This oxidation of the coating layer of the cutting tools is not desirable. Many researchers across the globe are working towards improving the performance of these coatings for cutting tools.
