The high global demand of oil and gas as sources of energy, has stimulated the development and optimization of pipeline networks that are necessary to carry natural crude oil and gas from extraction fields to storage sites and from there to treatment plants and distribution facilities, and ultimately, to urban and industrial areas for consumption. The degeneration of walls of steel pipes due high concentration of corrosive agents carried in the gas stream, such as, carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and calcium and chlorine compounds, cause deterioration of the steel pipes. In addition to the contaminants, the condensed salt water usually found inside the pipelines also aggravates corrosion of the pipelines. As pipelines are used worldwide for transportation of oil, gas, and petroleum, they must be protected from corrosion over long periods of time to avoid failures. There has been considerable effort by manufacturers of coatings and coating scientists to develop test methods that can predict corrosion protection by organic coatings, and that are numerical, reproducible, accurate, and differentiate, and which also emulate the field conditions experienced by coatings. However, most of the existing corrosion protection coating products for application in oil and gas industry contain chemical solvents that are environmentally hazardous and highly toxic. Thus, it is important to develop environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas industry.
