Two relatively recent applications have started me thinking about the fastening on non-metallic components. The first was ledger board attachments to the rim joists in residential deck construction. The residential building codes for one- and two-family homes are adopted by each state. Copies can be found at your local town's building department and also online. The current edition of the building code for decks in my town and state reference 1/2-inch lag screws as one standard for fastening into the rim joist. These are typically construction lumber, such as 2×10 boards. Engineered lumber products are referenced also. Both of these types of materials have properties that have a significant differential in mechanical properties with respect to the fasteners.
