How would you convince members of the general public that the use of animals in medical research was justifiable?

I am often asked, what I do for a living and always get that feeling of dread; like swallowing a lump of coal when I have to explain myself. Almost every time I have given my true job title I am met with hostility and anger. Members of the public already have their minds made up on the subject of animal testing and to them, theyare the experts in what actually happens. I am automatically the devil incarnate because I enable the 'suffering and pain' of animals. So how do I get people to become more accepting of what it is I do? I fight the point of the need for animal research,not whether it' is right or wrong. When approaching the question without trying to change people's views on the subject, they seem more perceptive to listen and learn.
