Do Speech Contexts Induce Constancy of Material Perception Based on Impact Sound Under Reverberation?

Reverberation markedly distorts signals reaching our ears in a way that varies from room to room. Nevertheless, our hearing is robust against such distortions. Our earlier study indicated that material perception from impact sound is affected by the presence of reverberation, but repeated presentation of impact sounds with a constant reverberation reduced the effect. However, it was not clear whether this adaptation to reverberation is specific to the case where the context consists only of impact sounds related to the task. This study tested whether the adaptation is induced by a task-unrelated short speech sound preceding the target impact sound. The results failed to indicate the context effect. This suggests that a short speech segment with reverberation may be insufficient to induce the adaptation to reverberation. (c) 2018 The Author(s). Published by S. Hirzel Verlag . EAA.
