Consciousness as a Capability

Joseph Vukov (2018) argues that clinicians ought to recognize the moral salience of both potential and actual consciousness in minimally conscious state (MCS) patients. While the recognition of potential consciousness is a critical component of treating MCS patients, this framework can be enhanced by understanding consciousness as a capability rather than as a mere potential.
