The paper "Does occupational exposure to formaldehyde cause hematotoxicity and leukemia-specific chromosome changes in cultured myeloid progenitor cells?" (Mundt et al. 2017) does not add findings that further the debate about whether formaldehyde is a human leukemogen. The authors criticize studies by Zhang et al. (2010) and the follow up studies by many from the same group (Lan et al, 2015; Bassig et al. 2016). Their findings have had a major influence on deliberations concerning whether formaldehyde is a cause of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), including by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These authors reported a pancytopenic effect and specific chromosomal abnormalities consistent with secondary leukemia in workers at melamine-formaldehyde workplaces as compared to control workplaces.
