Hydantoin and derivatives as framework in medicinal chemistry: Recent approaches

Hydantoin and its derivatives constitute an important nucleus that has shown important pharmacological activities. In the review, the chemistry and reactivity of the hydantoin nucleus are presented in a general way, to focus the review on recent advances such as antibacterial, antidiabetic, anticancer agents, and others. Mechanisms of action are discussed, to finish with molecules that are found in clinical phase studies and drugs found in the market with the nucleus of interest. We hope that this review will provide interesting information to researchers in the field of medicinal chemistry, as well as a starting point for the synthesis of new molecules with better desired effects and fewer side effects.
