Elderly’s Thought About Nursing Homes: A Case Study of Vietnamese Elderly

This study was conducted on the elderly living in nursing homes. Subjects included 900 old people living in nine nursing homes in three regions of Vietnam, as well as managers and staff at the homes. The results showed that more than half of elderly respondents wanted to live in nursinghomes. They chose to spend their life in these facilities because they were homeless, childless or had lost their family (through divorce, death or missing in wars). The rest preferred to live with their family because to them, family care was irreplaceable as they get old. The findings indicateda good tradition of Vietnamese culture that has been quickly disappearing, i.e., respect to the elderly and filial piety manifested in caring for the elderly.
