High-Performance Materials from Plants

Covestro and the US biotechnology company Genomatica have joined forces to research and develop high-performance materials based on renewable raw materials.Conventional fossil-based resources,such as crude oil,are still the most common sources of carbon for the chemical and plastics industries.Using carbon from plants would help to reduce CO2 emissions and close the carbon loop in another step towards a circular economy.At the end of March Covestro announced its collaboration with the bio-tech company Genomatica with the aim of achieving this objective.In this long-term partnership,teams from both companies will work on developing commercially-focused innovations.Genomatica will deploy its strengths in creating industrial-scale bioprocesses to produce widely-used chemicals.Covestro will contribute its extensive expertise in chemical process technology and application development.
