Cooking For 9 to 12 Year Olds At Tbe Hawthorne Valley Dining Hall, New York

During the course of the school year 27 classes, grades 3-6, from all over the eastern part of the United States come to the Visiting Students Program (VSP) at Hawthorne Valley for a week's experience on the farm. Although many classes are from Waldorf schools, there is also regular yearly participation by a diverse group of other private schools. Summertime once again brings us children from as far away as California, Alaska and Virginia for our 9 year old's 2 week camp and 10-11 year old's 4 weekcamp. Many of the children's activities in one way or another have nutrition as the endpoint: egg gathering, animal feeding, compost building, sowing, harvesting, cookery, table setting, baking bread, making butter, pressing cider and gathering and boiling down sap into maple syrup.
