Recently the world-wide organisation Save the Children published its yearly report listing countries by where it is best to be a woman, mother and child (www.savethechildren.org). We are the lucky ones here in the Nordic countries, because the top rankings in the world start with Norway, followed by Australia, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, New Zealand and Finland, in that order. Indeed there is not much of a difference between these countries. Afghanistan is at the bottom, not surprisingly. The USA is number 31, and that may be surprising, - or perhaps not. Of 10 countries at the bottom eight are south of the Sahara. As it says in the report "the gap in availability of maternal and child health services is especially dramatic when comparing Norway and Afghanistan. Skilled health personnel are present at virtually every birth in Norway, while only 14 percent of births are attended in Afghanistan.
