A battle is heating up regarding the construction of the Williams Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline project, a 23 mile (37 km) pipeline along the bottom of the Raritan Bay connecting to the Transco pipeline offshore from Long Island, New York. The project is meant to deliver new gas supplies to Long Island and New York City. Following the rejection of the project by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the local gas utility National Grid implemented a moratorium for residential and commercial customers in parts of New York City and Long Island, preventing new connections. National Grid claims without new supplies, it can't guarantee enough gas to meet demand during peak periods. Gov. Cuomo responded by directing state agencies to investigate National Grid, threatening to replace them with another company.
