JAPAN COULD SPEND $23.11 billion for 105 Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, and related equipment, following the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency's (DSCA) announcement that approval has been granted for a possible foreign military sale (FMS). The DSCA announced the approval on July 9, stating that it had delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale on the same day. Japan's request is for 63 F-35As, the conventional take-off variant and 42 F-35Bs, which is the short take-off and vertical landing version. Japan's request also includes 110 Pratt and Whitney F135 engines, which includes five spares.
