E. herbicola Eh252 reduces the incidence of fire blight on apple and pear blossoms by producing an antibacterial compound which reduces growth of E. amylovora. Mutants which do not produce this substance are called Ant-. The genes necessary for theproduction of this substance were cloned and transferred into Escherichia coli yielding 5 clones that inhibited growth of E. amylovora.
