The "Bio-Plex Pro" assays are bead-based multiplex assays, built around three core technologies: the recently introduced xMAP technology, the detection of the fluorescent dyes by flow cytometry and an efficiently high speed signal processor. The first technology is based on xMAP microspheres (Luminex xMAP technology) with two fluorescent dyes in different ratios that allow the simultaneous detection of up to 100 distinctly colored bead sets (1). This analysis has the capability of measuring 100 different analytes in only one sample and with a small amount of sample (2). Compared with the most traditional standard techniques the multiplex assays have some advantages; namely, reduction in pipetting error, in handling time and costs and the unnecessary need of freezing/thawing cycles typically required for the measurement of multiple analytes.
