European experts point to data gaps on microplastic toxicity

Significant data gaps mean it is not yet possible to understand the potential health and environmental effects posed by microplastics, according to speakers at an online conference in October, organised by the international Akademie Fresenius. The EU is currently considering an Echa proposal for a REACH microplastics restriction, but this would cover only intentionally-added, or primary microplastics, which are deliberately manufactured as particles in the micrometre size range.
