Cytological features of intraoral tumour.

Cytopathological examination of the aspirates showed small basaloid cells with poorly denned cytoplasm, round-to-oval nuclei, and columnar epithelial cells with delicate cytoplasm. Stromal tissue was represented by hyaline globules (Figures 1 and 2). Occasionally, the fragments formed trabeculae, papillae and tubules. Necrosis, nuclear pleomorphism and mitoses were not seen. Slides from a cell block were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and revealed columnar or basaloid epithelial cells with pale to normochromatic basophilic nuclei, arranged in cords, tubules or ductal structures (Figure 3). Periodic acid-Schiff staining showed strongly stained connective tissue cores lined by columnar epithelium. In addition, immunocytochemistry showed tumour cells positive for cytokeratin 7 and negative for smooth muscle actin, vimentin and S-100 protein. A preoperative cytological diagnosis of monomorphic adenoma was made.
