Intact protoscolices and hooklets in cytospin preparation of intra-operative cyst fluid allow rapid confirmation of rare cerebral intraventricular hydatid infestation
Dear Editor, Hydatid disease occurs as a consequence of infestation by larval stages of echinococcus. Humans are incidental dead-end hosts infected by the faeco-oral route, through ingestion of embryonated ova from direct contact with dogs or food contaminated by canine faeces. The liver and lungs are the common sites of infestation. Cerebral or intraventricular hydatid cysts are rare manifestations, usually encountered in children and young adults. They have been reported in patients with patency of the ductus arteriosus.
