Transition metal thiophosphates have been known to exhibit wide structural diversities and technologically promising properties. Especially, the group 5 metal thiophosphate, TaPS6, has been known to adopt a framework structure with rather large empty channels, the diameter of which is about 4.65 A and it appears probable that guest ions can be inserted into this space.2 However, efforts to incorporate alkali metal ions into these voids have not been successful. This is probably due to the fact that the host structure is not retained during the insertion procedure by traditional chemical or electrochemical methods. Instead, a series of quaternary alkali metal group 5 metal thiophosphates, A_xMPS6 (A = K, Rb, Cs; M = Ta, Nb) have been prepared with the use of halide or sulfide fluxes.
