Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Amide-Type Phytoalexins as Depigmenting Agents

Phytoalexins are small molecular compounds generated from living plant when it is damaged by microbials. Resveratrol (trans-3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene), a naturally occurring hydroxyl stilbene, is considered as the best known phyto-alexin because of its various biological activities. Plenty of resveratrol is found in food including the skin of grapes, mulberries, and blueberries. Although it has wide biological activities such as positive effect on lifespan, antitumor activities, inhibition of adipogenesis, anti-angiogenic activities, scavenging of the free radicals, and inhibition of melanin synthesis, the usage of trans-resveratrol in cosmetics has been limited due to its unstability. Recently, a mimic compound (amide-type) of trans-resveratrol was synthesized and evaluated. It showed similar biological activities of trans-resveratrol and strong chemical stability (Figure 1).
