The spectacular 'cocoon' structure - an iconic eight-storey concrete shell at the centre of the Natural History Museum's Darwin Centre Phase 2, has been awarded Overall Winner at this year's prestigious Concrete Society Awards. It is the first time since 2006 that a project has merited The Society's top award. Formed with a continuous sprayed reinforced-concrete shell, typically 250mm thick, the 65m-long cocoon provides a home for 20 million of the Natural History Museum's plant and insect specimens and a working area for the research scientists. It also enables the public to interact with the scientists and the collections.
