A new species of Eremitis (Poaceae, Bambusoideae) from Rio Doce State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil, marks the furthest inland distribution of the genus

The bamboo genus Eremitis is one of the three genera of Parianinae, a subtribe within tribe Olyreae (Poaceae, Bambusoideae). As now understood, Eremitis includes six described species. While surveying the bamboos of Rio Doce State Park, some populations of Eremitis were collected and identified as E. parviflora. However, as part of a taxonomic revision of the genus, these specimens are now recognized as a new species, E. riodocensis, which is described and illustrated herein. It differs consistently from E. parviflora and other morphologically similar species in multiple morphological characters, as well as in its geographical distribution. The area where it was collected, about 294 km from the coast, represents the most inland distribution of the genus. Following the IUCN Red List categories and criteria, we assess its conservation status to be Endangered (EN). Comments on the morphology, taxonomic relationships, and habitat of the new species are provided.
