Patient safety initiatives from around the world

The Second Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety was held in Bonn, Germany, in March 2017. It is now an annual event and enables countries to share learning and tools to help tackle common challenges. It is part of a global movement to establish a shared global political focus on patient safety (Federal Ministry of Health, 2017a). Ministers of health and high-level delegates from 45 countries across different geographical regions and levels of economic development took part, as well as representatives from global organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and international and national patient safety experts. The summit addressed key technical areas in patient safety through workshops, and participants expressed their thoughts on and commitment to patient safety. Out of this global summit came several important global patient safety policies and publications, including the Godschalk et al (2017) report, which is the focus of this article.
