Backroom Enthusiast and Pioneer: Peter Broughton, 1924-2011

Peter spent his formative school years in Welwyn Garden City and in the countryside near Exeter, graduating in chemistry from Exeter in December 1944. After a couple of years in food research he found his metier as a clinical biochemist starting at the Radcliffe Infirmary at Oxford in 1948, where he learnt rapidly and with enthusiasm.He married Joyce in 1946 and their children, Nigel and Wendy were born during those Oxford years. In 1956 Peter left the teaching hospital environment becoming the only biochemist at Chelmsford, initially as Principal Biochemist but advancing to Top Grade in 1962. He ran his own laboratory and also managed to initiate some research, which was a novelty there at that time.
